In the last four years, there has been a 23 percent increase in the number of candidates registering for the NEET UG exam. Similar growth is observed in the number of registrations of men and women.
NEET UG 2023 The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Monday started the registration for the National Undergraduate Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2023. Interested candidates can apply at the official website of NTA — neet.nta.nic.in.
According to registration statistics released by the NTA, an all-time high of 20.87 lakh candidates have applied for the NEET 2023 exam, over 2.57 lakh more than last year. This data also includes 12 lakh female candidates, according to officials as reported by the news agency PTI.
Last year, Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of NEET UG registrations (2.5 lahks), out of which 2.4 lakh candidates cleared the exam and 1.13 lakh qualified, according to NTA data.

After Maharashtra, UP was the second highest state in terms of number of candidates with 2.29 lakh registrations and 2.19 lakh attendance (of which 1.17 lakh qualified). UP was followed by 1.42 lakh registrations in Tamil Nadu, 1.33 lakh registrations in Karnataka and 1.28 lakh candidates in Kerala.
The number of candidates registering for the NEET UG exam has increased by 23 percent in the last four years, while the number of candidates clearing the medical entrance exam has also increased by 25 percent, according to data provided by the NTA.
In 2019, 15.1 million candidates registered for the exams, out of which 14.1 million appeared for the exam. These numbers increased to 15.9 lakh registrations and 13.6 lakh attendance in 2020. The number then increased significantly to 16.1 lakh registrations in 2021, of which 15.4 lakh appeared for the exam.
Post-Covid, NEET UG registrations have increased by more than 15 percent, jumping to 18.7 lakh in 2022, while the number of people appearing for the exam has also increased from 15.4 lakh to 17.6 lakh (14, 2 percent).
Similarly, the number of male and female candidates registering for the NEET UG examination has increased over the past four years. The number of male candidates increased from 6.8 lakh in 2019 to 8.07 lakh in 2022 (18.68 percent) and the number of female candidates increased by 26.1 percent (from 8.3 lakh in 2019 to 10 .6 lakh in 2022).
While the number of male and female candidates increased by 13 percent and 17 percent, respectively, from 2021 to 2022, this is not the case for the registration of transgender candidates. The number of transgender candidates increased by 83.3 percent over the past four years (6 in 2019 to 11 in 2022), but decreased from 15 in 2021 to 11 in 2022.
