Cost of studying engineering in Germany

Germany, which has become a popular academic destination for international students, made headlines when it waived tuition fees for bachelor’s and consecutive master’s programs at public universities. However, graduate students must still pay tuition in some cases.

Tuition fees

If you go to a public university in Germany and get a bachelor’s degree in engineering, you don’t have to pay any tuition fees as mentioned earlier. Germany is also unique in that students from outside the EU/EEA pay the same fees as those within the EU. This is in contrast to major study-abroad destinations, be it the UK or France, where fees for non-residents are more than three to five times the local rate. Even in countries like Australia and USA, international students pay much more than local students.

In the case of a master’s degree, you do not have to pay any fees if it is considered “sequential” or, in other words if it follows directly from a corresponding bachelor’s degree obtained at a German university. You will need to pay a small fee per semester for registration, confirmation, and administration, as well as a semester ticket.

Non-consecutive program fees: If your master’s degree is non-consecutive, you may have to shell out more than €10,000 (US$11,450) per semester.

Private University Tuition Fees: Private universities are expected to be more expensive and charge fees even for undergraduate tuition. Jacobs University, for example, charges about €20,000 per year for undergraduate courses, while it is between €10,000 and €20,000 per year for master’s courses. The fees for MSc Data Engineering and MSc Supply Chain Engineering & Management at the university are €20,000 per year.

No fee for postgraduate students at public universities: Postgraduate studies are free at all German public universities – at least for the first six months of the program. However, graduate students are required to make a semester contribution of €150 (US$170) to €€200 (US$230) for administration and similar other costs.
