Women have different bodies than men. This means that there are many medical injuries, sicknesses, and diseases that only women can have. Thus, there is a need for doctors and surgeons who can take care of only women-centric medical problems. If you want to become a specialist doctor or surgeon for women, then the career for you is a gynaecologist.

A Gynaecologist is a surgeon or physician who treats injuries, and diseases, (physical or psychological) around women’s genitals (vagina, ovaries, vulva, clitoris and breast). The gynaecologist also specialises in childbirth and labour. As a gynaecologist, you will also assist woman patients regarding their menstruation and menopause issues. Many women suffer from psychological issues and fears around their body and you will also assist these women. You will also provide them with information about safe sex, pregnancy, menstruation, periods, etc.

Why become a Gynaecologist?

Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (OB/GYN) are specialist medical doctors who provide medical care related to pregnancy, childbirth and female reproductive systems (vagina, uterus and ovaries) and breasts. As a gynaecologist, you will treat, counsel and educate women throughout the period of their pregnancy, childbirth and post-pregnancy. You will also diagnose and treat several health issues specific to women’s reproductive systems like microbial infections, disorders of the reproductive systems, menstrual problems, hormonal disorders, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and menopause.

As a gynaecologist, you will be either a physician or surgeon or both. If you are a surgeon, you will perform various surgeries related to childbirth, disorders of the female reproductive system, injuries and trauma of the female reproductive system, breast cancer, cervical cancer, etc. You will use different kinds of equipment and machines like ultrasound machines to help in the diagnosis.

  1. Paediatric Gynaecologists diagnose, treat, cure and prevent various diseases, ailments, and disorders of the female reproductive systems in girl children.
  2. Gynaecological Oncologists diagnose, treat, cure and prevent cancer of the female reproductive system such as cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, etc.
  3. Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists are concerned with the health issues of pregnant mothers and fetuses prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy and after pregnancy (till the newborns are about 6 months old).
  4. Reproductive Medicine Specialists are concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of diseases, ailments, and health-related problems related to female reproductive systems. Often, the key objective of the Specialists is to help people have children either by different treatment and surgical procedures or by various fertilization procedures or by both.

What does a gynaecologist do?

As a Gynaecologist, you will be required to perform several duties including the following:

  • You will advise and counsel women during pregnancy and the post-pregnancy period.
  • You will examine the growth of babies in the womb, advise and counsel about healthcare during pregnancy and after, conduct childbirth procedures, and so on.
  • You will perform caesarean sections or any other surgical procedures to preserve the health of the mother and deliver babies safely.
  • You will provide sexual and health information to women, especially related to menstruation and pregnancy.
  • As a gynaecologist, you will collect, record and maintain information of the patient including medical histories, reports and examination results.
  • You will treat diseases related to the female reproductive system.
  • You will treat and care for women during prenatal, natal, and postnatal periods. 
  • As a gynaecologist, you will prescribe medicines, and administer treatment, therapy, medication or vaccination. You shall provide any other kind of specialized medical care to treat your patient suffering from illness, disease or injury.
  • You will write the daily progress report of hospitalized patients.
  • You will formulate a summary of discharge once the patient is discharged.
  • You will supervise all medical, paramedical and nurses and other staff of the department and push them to maintain high standards.
  • You will make sure that the quality of investigation and reports. You will also eliminate any errors in the procedure.
  • You will ensure that all patient safety policies are followed within your department.

How to become a Gynaecologist – Eligibility Criteria

After your 10+2 in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, you should do an MBBS followed by an MD/MS in Gynaecology. Alternatively, you can also do a DNB in Gynaecology. After your MD/MS/DNB, you may also choose to super specialise by doing a DM/MCh in a discipline like Paediatric Gynaecology, Gynaecological Oncology, Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Medicine, etc. After DM/MCh, you can further do a Fellowship.

Educational Fees

Becoming a gynaecologist in India typically involves completing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree, followed by a postgraduate degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The cost of obtaining these degrees can vary depending on the institution and the location.

Here is a general breakdown of the costs involved in becoming a gynaecologist in India:

  • MBBS Degree: The cost of an MBBS degree in India can range from Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 50 lakhs or more, depending on the institution. Government medical colleges generally have lower fees compared to private medical colleges.
  • Postgraduate Degree: After completing the MBBS degree, you will need to complete a postgraduate degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The cost of this degree can vary from Rs. 10 lakhs to Rs. 25 lakhs or more, depending on the institution.

Job Opportunities

  • After MBBS, if you get a chance to do your MD/MS, you can join a hospital as Junior Resident.
  • After your MD / MS / DNB, you can join a hospital as a Medical Officer (Specialist) or as a Consultant Gynaecologist.
  • After your MD/MS/DNB, if you secure a seat in DM/MCh, then you can join a hospital as a Senior Resident.
  • You can join hospitals and clinics as a Consultant Physician (Duty Officer).
  • You can also join a medical college at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Salary of a Gynaecologist

After completing M.D. /M.S./ D.N.B. course:

  • At the entry-level, one joins as a Consultant Physician and earns about Rs. 80,000 – 1,20,000 a month. With experience, their salary increases.
  • At the junior level with a work experience of 5-6 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 per month.
  • At the middle level with an experience of 8-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 1,40,000 to 3,00,000 per month.
  • At the senior level of over 12 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 2,40,000 to 6,00,000 per month or even more.

After completing D.M./ M.Ch. course:

  • At the entry-level, you can earn about Rs. 1,50,000 – 2,00,000 a month. With experience, their salary increases.
  • At the junior level with a work experience of 5-6 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 2,00,000 to 3,00,000 per month.
  • At the middle level with an experience of 8-12 years, you would be earning anything between Rs. 2,50,000 to 5,00,000 per month.
  • At the senior level of over 12 years of work experience, you would be earning anything between Rs. 3,00,000 to 12,00,000 per month or even more.

Career Progression in Gynaecologist Profession 

  • The career growth in university and college states from Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor, Professor and Professor Emeritus. Professors can also get administrative positions such as Director/Dean/Vice Chancellor, etc
  • If you are hired as a junior resident, then you will move to senior resident and then either you can choose to be a fellow or join any hospital as a Medical officer (Physician) or Consultant Physician.
  • If you Join as a Consultant Physician (Duty Officer), then you will go on to become Deputy Medical Superintendent and then Additional Medical Superintendent and then Medical Superintendent. You might also become the director of the Hospital.

Indian Medical industry is growing exponentially riding on strong demand due to rising incomes, greater health awareness and an increase in access to insurance. This is particularly true for female patients who are more independent today and are more educated and aware of women’s problems. According to ibef.org, the Indian medical industry is expected to grow to 373 Billion USD in 2022. Thus, the medical industry is expected to grow at 16-17% per year from 2017 to 2022.  Also, with the introduction of Ayushman Bharat, Insurance and medical benefit are given by the Government of India, and more and more people will start using medical facilities. All these numbers indicate a bright future for gynaecologists.
