The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant change. The change is for students who opted for Basic Mathematics in Class 10 in the academic year 2023-24. These students are now allowed to choose Standard Mathematics for Class 11 in the academic year 2024-25. This decision comes in light of the ongoing changes due to the National Education Policy (NEP).
This move marks a departure from previous rules where students who selected Basic Mathematics in Class 10. In Class 11, they were restricted from choosing Mathematics subjects. They were only allowed to study Applied Mathematics, not Standard Mathematics.
In its official notification, the CBSE mentioned, “In the past, CBSE has given an exemption to offer Standard Mathematics (041) in Class XI/XII to the students who offered Mathematics (Basic) in Class X because of the Covid pandemic.” This exemption has now been extended for the academic session 2024-25.
However, schools must ensure that students have the aptitude and capability to pursue Standard Mathematics in Class 11. The head of the institution or school needs to assess whether students possess the necessary skills and interests. To undertake Standard Mathematics (041) in Class 11.
Students in Class 10 for the academic year 2024-25 are urged to choose their subjects carefully. The CBSE will not permit any further changes once subjects are selected in the LOC (List of Candidates). The notification emphasized that once subjects are chosen in the LOC, no alterations will be allowed, and the policy from January 10, 2019, will be strictly followed.
The 2019 policy introduced two levels of Mathematics for Classes 11 and 12. Standard Mathematics (041) was designed for students planning to pursue Mathematics in Class 12, while Basic Mathematics (241) was for those not intending to continue with Mathematics at higher levels. Students who took Basic Mathematics in Class 10 were limited to studying only Applied Mathematics in Class 11.
This recent decision by the CBSE opens up new opportunities for students who wish to transition from Basic Mathematics to Standard Mathematics, aligning with the evolving educational landscape and providing more flexibility in academic choices.
