Yes. There are medical courses in IIT. Interested in courses after MBBS in IIT?

.

.

However, only IIT Kharagpur has a facility called the School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST) that had started way back in 2001 with the objective of aligning the prowess of engineers with the needs of the medicine & healthcare industry. In this department, you can have the option of IIT courses after MBBS.

IIT Kharagpur MBBS

SMST had initially started with only postgraduate (PG) courses in the beginning and now is planning to expand into an MBBS program too with 50 students. IITs don’t have the authority to conduct MBBS courses as of now, unless advised by a leading medical institution. However, IIT KGP has initiated talks in this direction long back.

Although, the UGC approval procedure had begun way back in 2018, as of 2022, the MBBS program is still under process and planning.

Given the pandemic situation coupled with other reasons, the first MBBS batch could not be started, though IIT KGP has received a nod from the GoI to start it, in consultation with AIIMS.

Moreover, as far as public information goes, IIT Kharagpur MBBS will not allow NEET candidates. It is reported to be planning a different admission process.

PhD at IIT for Working Professionals

Individuals working in companies (private/government), research organizations, Ministries of Central and State Governments are eligible to pursue a PhD at IITs in their respective disciplines according to criteria given in this prospectus.

UGC’s Multidisciplinary Education Scheme

According to the 2022 draft guidelines of UGC, it is boosting all higher education institutions (HEIs) towards research and help produce professionals including doctors and engineers adept with both technology and social sciences. This means, IITs can be expected to develop their own UG medicine programs too.

UGC also intends to introduce a system for industry experts to teach as university faculty members.

Colleges can prepare for introducing new “Innovative Programs” under this special scheme as a type of full-time course (UG or PG) or as a special paper added to existing courses.

The types of full-time innovative programs can be:

  • Undergraduate
  • M.A/M.Sc.
  • M.Phil
  • M.Ed
  • Ph.D.
  • PG Diploma

Non-PhD Teachers Allowed by UGC

In a revolutionary move, as of March 2022, UGC has decided to permit non-PhD holders to teach in central universities in order to reign in talent from the industry with ample domain expertise. However, the selection & recruitment process is yet to be finalized. This applies to all disciplines including Performing Arts like Dance and Music.

It’s a Wrap!

That must have been a mind-bender! We are also hopeful that IIT KGP can resume its attempt towards constructing a successful programme for aspiring doctors and set-up a proper admission process soon for MBBS.

IIT Kanpur is soon to replicate the entire concept and introduce a specialty hospital for training UG doctors as well.
