Law: Overview

As society evolved, it led to the formation of laws that provided both rights and duties to the citizens. Civil law is related to noncriminal cases concerning the rights and liberties of the people. The field offers exciting and challenging opportunities for aspirants passionate about the subject. It is not limited to learning constitutional law but essentially consists of empathizing with the concerns of society and then fighting for justice. Being a highly professionalized and prestigious field, civil law welcomes aspirers to build a glorified career.

Education Requirement

A career in Civil law involves a clear understanding of the society, customs that prevail in society and the laws related to it. An individual needs to be well qualified and must have ample knowledge about the Constitution and the legislations. After 12th, five-year graduation programs for the law are available, including B.A. LL.B or B. Sc. LL.B. Thus, students from any field can pursue their career in law.

After graduation, a three-year degree course, LL.B. can be done. Students aspiring to study ahead can undertake a two-year master’s program, LL. M, after graduation. Diploma courses are also present specific to civil law related to human rights, women, family laws, juvenile justice, and others. Post-graduation courses such as Masters in Philosophy and Doctorate can be done in civil law. India has some of the prestigious law universities that offer courses to highly skilled students.

There are 16 prominent National Law Universities, where admission is granted only after qualification of the Common Law Aptitude Test (CLAT). The test includes basic mathematics, aptitude, English and general knowledge. Other universities also conduct their respective entrance exams for admission. Hence, in order to pursue a career in civil law, you need to have a clear understanding of the fundamentals of law.

Fee structure

To pursue a career in Civil Law, the fee depends on several factors. The tuition fee for the NLU’s is higher as compared to other universities. NLUs are highly prestigious with skilled and advanced libraries and academic facilities. There are only 450 seats available in NLU’s for students from all across the country. The annual fee structure in NLU’s ranges from 75000 INR to 125000 INR.

For other Universities, the fees are much less and they range from 7000 INR to 30000 INR. Foreign universities, apart from graduation and post-graduation degrees, provide doctoral degrees in Jurisprudence (J.S.D.), and Doctor of Comparative Law (D.Comp.L.). The annual fee structure in foreign universities ranges from 700000 INR to 120000 INR. Scholarships and fee concessions are available for meritorious students in India and abroad.

Job Opportunities

The increase in the societal awareness amongst individuals as well as about their rights has increased career opportunities in the field of civil law. Civil law is related to maintain a balance between the different institutions of the government and individuals or groups of individuals. A qualified individual in the field of civil law can work in cases related to the infringement of rights and liberties related to issues such as education, housing, employment, expression, and others. Thus a career in civil law offers a number of job opportunities in varied fields.

There are several job opportunities with diverse subjects, depending upon the specialization and interest of the individual. A law graduate, after clearance of the bar association’s exam, can practice as a lawyer and work on several cases related to civil law. Civil rights attorneys are also hired by several government institutes, private law firms and nonprofit organizations. National Human Rights Commission, National Commission for Women, and other national and state organizations also hire civil law graduates and postgraduates.

Other job opportunities in civil law include teachers and lecturers in various renowned universities. Law graduates can prepare for higher posts such as civil services and judicial services. Journalism, Policy analysis, politics, publishing of law related books and research papers, and social work are some of the other opportunities that a civil law educated individual can advance in. 

At the international level, organizations such as the United Nations Human Rights Commission and non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International offer job opportunities. Job profiles in civil law are filled with immense hard- work but pay well when a person through his skills establishes themselves as a capable lawyer. Civil services and judiciary posts can be acquired by qualifying in the exams.

Salary Structure

The salaries depend upon the experience and qualifications of the individual. The average pay scale for a lawyer ranges from 8000- 25000 INR per month. In civil services job profiles, the salaries range from 35000- 50000 INR. It is a job that offers prestige, recognition and good pay scales.
