This 19-year-old care leaver from Jaipur is polite, well-mannered, and academically strong. After leaving the care center, he stayed with his accountant brother and prepared for CUET. In February 2024, he joined the WeLive Foundation for a bridge program to help him transition to becoming an independent young adult.
While his brother influenced him to pursue engineering, he is passionate about writing, aspires to study mass communication, and has shown interest in modeling. He has researched courses and colleges in Delhi.
He is academically good, scoring 92% in 10th grade and 82% in 12th grade. He was at a crossroads with his aspirations, basic needs to survive, and identity. He is skilled at understanding information and ready to put in the effort. He is adaptable and eager to move forward in life.
He needed Career counselling to explore options in mass communication, modelling, and engineering. The guidance also requires information about part-time opportunities in modelling while studying.
During our counselling sessions, the Counselor worked closely with Rajkumar to explore his interests, strengths, and career aspirations. His passion for writing(Hindi) and strong interpersonal skills made mass communication appealing, but his brother also influenced him to consider engineering.
Rajkumar’s academic strengths in subjects like physics and social sciences opened up many possibilities. However, his emotional sensitivity and the pressure to pursue a traditional career path led to uncertainty about his future.
The guidance also helped Rajkumar identify challenges such as the competitive nature of entrance exams like CUET, emotional sensitivity, and the difficulty of balancing job and study commitments. To manage emotional challenges, the counsellor suggested journaling and continuing his interest in poetry, which could provide an outlet for his emotions.
Additionally, the counselor encouraged him to accept and embrace his identity and orientation, helping him gain confidence in who he is.
After exploring his options, Rajkumar chose to pursue a career in social work, a field that aligns with his interpersonal skills and passion for helping others. We also discussed the uncertainty in the modelling career, which helped him make a more informed decision. To further support his development, we suggested activities like reading and solving puzzles to improve his verbal and reasoning aptitudes.
With the guidance, Rajkumar felt empowered to follow his path in social work, understanding that it was a fulfilling and realistic option for his future. After evaluating all the current situations, and the day scholar possibilities in the colleges in Bangalore, Rajkumar decided to pursue BSW with IGNOU and started to search for a job.
