Obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN) is an emerging branch of medicine requiring utmost dedication as it deals with the risks of lives. Explore how this noble field is not only a life savior branch, but also offer a successful career.

Biological differences have endowed us with certain organs that appear weak, but are the source of life of human beings. Female reproductive parts are essential for our existence, but however, medicine did not pay much focus to it in the initial years of development. With time and growth, the field of obstetrician-gynecologist emerged that deals with medical specialization in female reproductive parts. It is a branch of medicine that requires extreme care and theoretical as well as practical expertise. The profession is one of noblest because it deals with the cures that empowers physical safety of women and eases the pain and complications in reproduction. In order to pursue a career in OBGYN, a student has to complete 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as subjects and then attain an MBBS degree from a recognized medical college. After graduation, you go for a specialization in the field of obstetrics & gynecology in your post-graduation. After post-graduation, a student can pursue doctorate as well. All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination is to be cleared by the students to seek admission in respective universities.  Nearly 10 to 15 years of education as well as practical experience is needed in order to become an obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN). The first half of the years are invested in training program related to general medical field. In the later years, an individual attains specialization in OBGYN.

Specialization can be attained in several sub-categories such as fetal and maternal medicine, Obstetrics Residency, Female Pelvic Medicine and others. MS, MD degrees can be pursued. For in-depth research, doctors can pursue M.Phil and doctorate in OBGYN.

The annual fee structure varies beginning from 12000 INR p.a. in government colleges to 250,000 INR p.a. in private colleges. In universities abroad, the annual fee begins from 500,000 INR. AIIMS is the most prestigious university in India, with tuition fees as 1050 INR only.

Entrance Exam

There are four entrance exam for admission to post graduate course in Obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN) in all the medical colleges of India.

NEET-PG is an eligibility-cum-ranking examination prescribed as the single entrance examination to various MD/MS and PG diploma courses. NEET-PG is a single window entrance examination for PG courses. No other entrance examination, either at state or institutional level, shall be valid for entry to MD/MS/PG diploma courses as per the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 w.e.f. 2017 admission session.
