Career Overview

What is Computer Engineering?

Computer Engineering is the field of engineering that combines electrical science and computer science to develop computer systems, hardware, and software. The roots of computer engineering can be traced back as far as the 1940s, when the first computing device was invented. This field of engineering became popular in the mid 70s when it was introduced in different colleges across the world. . As technology has led the world to become more digital, the role of computer engineering has become increasingly prominent.

Different specialties under computer engineering include cryptography, communication networks, operating systems, computational science, robotics, ICs, etc.

What do Computer Engineers do?

Computer engineers work in designing, development, testing, and maintenance of computer and its components.

They may work in one of the following profiles:

  • Software Engineer: A Software Engineer designs and writes programs to develop software’s for computers and other electronic devices. On an average, a Software Engineer earns around 2, 41,580 to 10, 72,741 INR per annum.
  • Testing/QA Engineer: A Testing/QA engineer monitors every phase of software development. They ensure that the software adheres to the standards set by the company. On an average, a Testing/QA Engineer earns around 1, 91,262 to 8, 21,795 INR per annum.
  • Networking Engineer: A Networking Engineer works on designing and implementing computer networks. On an average, a Networking Engineer earns around 1, 39,185 to 8, 11,272 INR per annum.
  • Robotics Engineer: A Robotics Engineer works on developing robots by writing programmes and software. On an average, a Robotics Engineer earns around 1,82,461 to 36,36,500 INR per annum.
  • Hardware Computer Engineer: Hardware engineer works on designing, developing, and testing computer systems, and its components. On an average, a Hardware Engineer earns around 88,664 to 927,378 INR per annum.

Famous personalities in this career

Sundar Pichai: Sundar Pichai is the current CEO of Google. He is a Metallurgical Engineer from IIT Kharagpur. Despite having a degree in Metallurgical Engineering, he gained prominence in computer engineering since joining Google in 2004 as Product Manager. Since then, he has worked there and has climbed to the top post in 2015 in the most prestigious IT company.

Shiva Ayyadurai: Shiva Ayyadurai is credited as the inventor of E-mail. He developed a computer program called “E-mail” in 1978 at the age of 14 years. He received a copyright for “E-mail” in 1982. Shiva completed his electrical and computer engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is currently the founder of Systems Health online education system.

Why you may want to enter into Computer Engineering?

Key Competencies:

  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Programming
  • Hardware knowledge

Opportunities:

Since the rise of technology in the last 20 years, the opportunities for Computer Engineers have grown immensely in both, India and worldwide.

Private Sector opportunities: India is home to 3 of the largest IT companies - TCS, Infosys, and Wipro. Apart from these IT companies, international companies like Facebook, Google, etc. and many other IT consultancies like Accenture, IBM offer huge opportunities. Computer hardware and software companies like Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, etc. also offer many opportunities.

Public Sector opportunities: Different PSUs also hire CS engineers on a regular basis. These include Coal India Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, Indian Oil Corporation, Steel Authority of Indian Limited, ONGC, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, etc. Several government organizations like ISRO also offer such opportunities.

Academic Opportunities: Every College that offers courses on computer engineering has opportunities within academics for Computer engineers interested in teaching and research.

How do you get into Computer Engineering?

To get into Computer Engineering, a candidate needs to choose Physics, Chemistry, and Maths (PCM) in 11thstandard. While he or she is completing their study of these subjects, he or she should start preparing for the JEE, & other entrance exams. After completing 12thstandard, one appears for the JEE exam/SAT exam that gives them a chance to apply for all IITs and NITs in the country or different universities internationally. Once the student has found admission in a college based on rank in IIT and counselling, the student completes the four-year course. After B.Tech, one can decide to enter into the work force or decide to study M.Tech further. After M.Tech, one can enter the academic field by giving NET exam and doing Ph.D.

Alternatively, if a candidate only wants to enter the software side, he or she may get Bachelors in Computer Application (BCA) after 12thstandard (irrespective of PCM) and then pursue a Masters in Computer Application (MCA) to enter the field. Also, even if a candidate is not sure of taking Engineering, and thus did not pursue a BCA, he or she may still apply for a MCA.

Candidates can apply for jobs after completing respective courses. Alternatively, they can continue to study and complete their Ph.D after Post Graduation to enter into academics.
