Design your career as an Architect








Know all about a career as an architect; the job, his skills, his salary, his education, the colleges offering this course, their fees and the prospects abroad.

People need places to live, work, play, learn, shop, and eat. Architects are responsible for designing these places. They work on public or private projects and design both indoor and outdoor spaces. Architects can be commissioned to design anything from a single room to an entire complex of buildings.

A career in architecture offers opportunities to shape, perhaps even transform the environment in which we live. The profession of architecture involves everything that influences the way in which the built environment is planned, designed, made, used and maintained.

Architects are not only involved in mainstream architectural practice but are working increasingly in occupations ranging from urban planning and property development to teaching, furniture design and disaster relief.

On a typical day an architect will:

  • Discuss the objectives, requirements, and budget of a project with the prospective client
  • Provide various predesign services which may include conducting feasibility and environmental impact studies, selecting a site, or specifying the requirements the design must meet
  • Prepare sketches and present ideas to a client
  • Develop final construction plans including aesthetics and details
  • Follow building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations, and other ordinances
  • Continuously reviewing the planning process and suggesting modifications

Skills Required

  1. Analytical abilities.Architects must understand the content and context behind the designs. For example, architects must understand the locations of mechanical systems and how those systems affect building operations.
  2. Communication prowess.Architects should be able to articulate well as they share their ideas, both in oral presentations and in writing, with clients, other architects, and workers who help prepare drawings. Many also give presentations to explain their designs.
  3. Creativity.Architects designs sketches of the overall look of houses, buildings, and other structures. Therefore, the final product should be attractive and creative.
  4. Business skills.Architects often manage contracts. Therefore, they must keep records related to the details of a project, including total cost, materials used, and progress.
  5. Technical skills.Architects are a bit of tech-wizards too as they use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) technology to create plans as part of integrated building information modeling (BIM).
  6. Visualization skills.Architects must have the power to foresee how the parts of a structure relate to each other. They must be able to visualize in advance how the final product will look on completion.

Career Path

After 10th class, one has to take science with PCM as subjects. From academic year 2018-19 it is compulsory to take Science (PCM) to be eligible to sit for architecture entrance exams.  

There are two major entrance tests for admission in colleges with courses in architecture:

  • E.E Main (Paper 2) – an All India entrance exam for B.Arch. courses in various Architecture colleges in India.

                -It includes of 2 parts:

  1. Part 1 (Objects, Texture, Visualizing, Mathematical Ability etc)
  2. Part 2 (3-D perception)

                -It allows you to apply for B.Arch. in NITs and SPAs

  • JEE Main (Paper 1) - The Paper 1 part of the JEE Main is generally for B.Tech/ E aspirants. However, if you clear JEE Main (Paper 1) and then clear JEE advanced, you may get admitted to IIT Roorkee or IIT Kharagpur.
  • National Aptitude Test for Architecture (NATA) - is a test of 200 marks and you need to get at least 80 marks to pass. The score is calculated by the admitting colleges by adding 50% of your Board marks and 50% of your NATA marks.

A Design Architect earns an average salary of Rs 368,390 per year. Experience strongly influences pay for this job. A skill in Autodesk 3ds Max is associated with high pay for this job. Most people move on to other jobs if they have more than 20 years' experience in this field.

In United Kingdom, the graduate and postgraduate course are of 5 years and 2 years respectively. Foreign students have to averagely pay 10,500 pounds as annual fees accompanied with a very high cost of living. The job prospects are very good. Designing sets for TV shows, museums, retail design are lines that you can pursue.

An Architect earns an average salary of $58,836 per year. The highest paying skills associated with this job are Project Management, Microsoft Excel, Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD), and Computer Aided Design (CAD). Experience has a moderate effect on income for this job.
