A-Z-Guide-to-a-Successful-Career-in-Hotel-Management

As humans, we always have the inherent desire to be a traveller. We want to travel around the world and experience nature, architecture, food, culture, and all that. One of the first things that we do when planning a trip is that we book a stay – mostly at hotels and resorts. So, professionals involved in hotel management manage the operations of these hotels and resorts.

Do we book hotels only when we travel for leisure and recreation? Of course not. We book hotels for business travel, weddings, parties, meetings, conferences, exhibitions, seminars, and even for organising an event for sales promotion.

As per a report on Bloomberg, the MICE (Meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) industry alone is going to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of about 7.6% to reach a size of 1439 Billion USD. The growth could be slower in 2020 and 2021 for the Covid-19 outbreak but it will start growing again post 2021. Moreover, the big fat destination wedding industry is growing at a dizzy pace. Therefore, happy days are ahead for those who are thinking about a career in hotel management.

  1. Hi,
My name is kanchan from mumbai.
I am 34 year old .I currently working with a real estate company as Sr. Front office executive. I would like to complete masters in hospitality. Should I will get a good job or entry in this luxurious industry.

    1. Hello,

As a 34-year-old, I’m sure you have acquired some skills in your area of work. A lot of the skills you need and possess are needed in the hospitality industry. A master’s in hospitality would definitely give you some more information on the industry however you would know that the hospitality industry rewards experience and finesse more than it rewards qualifications.
You may alternatively look at short term courses that help you acquire specific skill sets in the career you wish to pursue in the hospitality sector and also seek out your networks to help you understand what are the needed skillsets for the various profiles in that sector. You may choose to focus on those skillsets to get the job you want. However, do bear in mind that the hospitality industry has now hit a major slump because of the current situation so you would not find too many openings anytime soon.
      All the best.

  2. I want to be a chef and study Culinary Arts as I am good in drawing, painting and sketching. Is it better to join Hotel management or Culinary Arts. Can you suggest as to how to clear the all India entrance examination of culinary academy of India .

    1. Hello,

Culinary Arts is better for someone who is sure about working in Food Production. While the artistic skills help a lot in creating visually appealing dishes (especially in Bakery & Confectionery). For Hotel Management most colleges follow NCHMCT JEE. For Culinary Arts, most colleges have their own entrance exam plus interview process. You may have to check the individual college site for more info.
