Why Become a Yoga Instructor?

As a Yoga Instructor, you will be demonstrating yoga postures, asanas, pranayamas, meditation and relaxation techniques to students including children, adults and the elderly. You must have knowledge of the principles and practices of basic Yogic techniques to explain and respond to various questions or problems that your students may have while following you. You will also have to evaluate their performances and correct them from time to time.

Your primary objective should be providing Yoga training to pupils for their well-being and to enhance their fitness (both mind and body). You will also be involved in providing recommendations or giving suggestions regarding healthy lifestyle habits, basic rules of good nutrition and related topics for improving the quality of their life so that they are able to follow the Yogic postures effectively.

You should also keep yourself updated about Yogic programs, discoveries, technological advancements, seminars, competitions and conferences around the globe related to the world of Yoga. As a Yoga Instructor, you can choose to work with private Yoga training societies, hotels, schools, hospitals or other Government agencies as well as practice individually.

What Does a Yoga Instructor do?

As a Yoga Instructor, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: –

  1. You will teach students/participants about various yogic positions starting with basic steps and exercises.
  2. You will perform and demonstrate all yoga exercises to participants and ensure compliance with safety and health standards.
  3. You will prepare and promote schedules for group fitness and assist participants with various postures during the class.
  4. You will design safe and comprehensive yoga programs for various participants from diverse groups.
  5. You will inform participants about the various yoga forms and their effects on both the body and mind.
  6. You will evaluate the performance of participants and recommend correction whenever required.
  7. You will monitor the fitness level and requirements of all participants and design classes to suit individual needs.
  8. You will counsel on lifestyle and dietary matters to help participants achieve their fitness goals while simultaneously promoting a healthy body and mind.
  9. You will encourage participants to try new poses and help them build confidence.

How to Become a Yoga Instructor – Eligibility Criteria

After Class 8, you can go for NSQF courses.

After Class 10, you can go for:

  • Diploma / Certificate courses.
  • NSQF courses.
  • MES courses.

After Class 11-12, you can go for:

  • Diploma / Certificate courses.
  • B. Voc or Bachelor degree courses.
  • NSQF courses.

Various private and public educational establishments offer these or related courses:

  • Yoga
  • Yoga Education and Training
  • Yoga Training

Job Opportunities

You will get many work opportunities with private Yoga training societies, hotels, schools, hospitals or other Government agencies as well as practice individually as a:

  • Yoga Instructor

  • Yoga Therapist
  • Yoga Teacher

Salary of a Yoga Instructor

At the beginning of your career, you can expect about Rs. 4,000 – 20,000 or more per month.

With 3-5 years of experience, you can expect about Rs. 7,000 – 25,000 or even more per month.

With 8-10 years of experience, you can expect about Rs. 15,000 – 35,000 or even more per month.

After 13+ years or experience, you can expect about Rs. 20,000 – Rs. 50,000 or more a month.

If you can set up your own Yoga studio, training school or wellness society, you may look forward to earning on the higher side.

Career Progression in Yoga Instructor Profession

With work experience, you can grow to become a Yoga Teacher, Senior Yoga Trainer, Yoga Master, Yoga Services Internal Evaluator etc.

You may also offer your services independently to customers by setting up your own Yoga studio, training school or wellness society after some years of experience. This means you can have your personal business network in this field in the future.

With a market worth of almost Rs. 499 billion, the Indian wellness market is thriving today. In the past few years, the demand for trained Yoga Instructors and Yoga Therapy has escalated rapidly as people are increasingly focusing on overall health and wellness. According to a study conducted in 2017, over half of the 200 million Yoga practitioners are of Indian origin. As people continue to take an active interest in health and fitness, it can be safely assumed that the demand for Yoga Instructors will increase considerably in the future.
