How to Become a Security Guard

Instead of getting into petty fights, why don’t you try your hands being a Security Guard or Body Guard and end up protecting people and properties? Joining the armed forces could be the best option for you, but if you can’t, then this is a good option.

Security Guards provide protection to people and assets from affronts, threats of violence, theft and other security risks. They may find work as Security Guards and later, after a few years of suitable experience, they may find work as Body Guards.

Why become a security guard?

As a Security Guard, your primary role will involve the protection of different types of physical assets such as buildings, factories, equipment, construction sites, bank ATMs, bank branches, banks’ vaults, shops, and commercial establishments as well as people. You will provide protection to vans transporting money or Jewellery.

You will provide the first level of protection to physical assets from theft, damages, fire, criminal acts and other contingencies; provide protection to people from physical assaults, affront, etc. 

Under Indian laws, you won’t be carrying any firearms unless you have a license. So, for discharging your duties, you will be depending mostly upon your physical and mental strength. If you are guarding a bank branch or protecting the transfer of money or Jewellery, you will be carrying licensed guns. 

What does a security guard do?

  • You will check and monitor people who may enter or exit from a building or physical facility such as a residential building, commercial building, shop, hospital, school, hotel, etc.
  • You will carry out basic physical frisking of people entering or exiting large public buildings and facilities such as a shopping mall and a hotel; you will use a hand-held metal detector in most cases.
  • You will monitor the process of X-Ray of goods as well as the personal belongings of people entering and exiting a building or a physical facility. You may carry out a routine search of the personal belongings of people when they are entering or exiting a building.
  • You will check various documents of people entering a building or a physical facility, which involves checking ID cards, tickets, passes, carrying out biometric verifications, etc.
  • You will observe and closely monitor activities around your designated post or area in a building or other physical facilities.
  • You will do patrolling of your designated area during day or night time.
  • You will handle various situations arising out of incidents such as violence, medical emergencies, fire, natural calamities, aggressive crowd behavior and different other situations when the physical assets or people you are protecting are under threat.
  • You will take the first level of action against intrusion, trespass, aggression, assault, attempt to theft, attempt to murder and other criminal activities.
  • You will protect physical assets by locking, shutting down, closing doors, etc.
  • You will arm and disarm various automated security alarm systems when required. You will answer alarm calls.
  • You may have to fill logbooks, and various report forms either physically or in the computer, write reports, etc. 

How to become a Security Guard – Eligibility Criteria

After Class 8 in school, you can obtain training and an NSQF Level 4 certification in Armed / Unarmed Security Guard.

After Class 10 with any subject, you can get training as a security guard from a vocational training institute.

Educational Fees

The Cost of becoming a security guard is somewhere around Rs. 5000 to 15,000.

Salary of a security guard

  • As an apprentice or trainee, you will be earning about Rs. 5,000-6,000 a month.
  • After 1-3 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 8,000-10,000 a month.
  • After 5-10 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 10,000-12,000 or more a month.
  • After 12-15 years of experience, you will be earning about Rs. 15,000-25,000 or more a month.
  • However, if you become reputed among your clients or start working for celebrities, the security company you are working for may want to retain your services at a much higher salary, in the range of Rs. 25,000-60,000 or more a month. You may also get offers individually from celebrities or reputed people. Personal Body Guards of celebrities may earn between Rs. 1,00,000 – 2,00,000 or even more per month.

Career Progression of security guard profession

With experience, you can become a Security Team Leader or a Supervisor managing a shift in your location or post or managing a number of guards in a given area. Then with 10-15 years of experience, you may become Operations Supervisor or Manager for a particular geographical area, looking after sites or posts over a large area. For example, you may be in charge of operations of all the sites in South Delhi. You may also become a Trainer after having 8-10 years of work experience.

A future prospect of this industry is very high. The security industry is having a large and expanding area of the economy with a global market worth of 173 billion USD. As per a report by FICCI in collaboration with PWC, Private Security Industry is one of the largest employing Industries with almost 8.5 million people and is having the potential to employ 3 million more people by 2020.
