How do you imagine yourself chasing chickens to catch them and collect their eggs? Have you always loved birds and animals? Have you taken care of them at your home or around? Do you like the smell of ruffling feathers? Then you may consider joining poultry farming and grow into a poultry farmer in a few years making handsome money.

Poultry Workers are involved in breeding and rearing of poultry birds and animals like chicken, duck, turkey, emu, etc. to produce meat and eggs for our daily consumption. Poultry Workers are involved in all the activities in a poultry farm.

Why become a poultry worker? 

As a Poultry Worker, you will work in poultry farms and will be involved in breeding and rearing of poultry animals such as chicken, duck, turkey, emu, goose, etc. to produce meat and eggs. Your primary work will involve ensuring appropriate feeding and taking care of animal health.

Your job will involve taking care of the feeding of the animals, clearing their litter and keeping their quarters clean and sanitised. You will ensure that animal diseases are prevented, they are provided medication to control diseases and they are healthy. You will examine their growth and weight gain.

What does a poultry worker do? 

As a Poultry Worker, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: – 

  • Handling and management of the breeding stocks, or small birds and animals which are nurtured and grown in a poultry farm.
  • Rearing and ensure appropriate health care of the poultry animals.
  • Feeding of the poultry animals to ensure proper nutrition and growth.
  • Mixing additives, feed and medicines in definite prescribed amounts.
  • Cleaning the poultry animals’ living quarters and sanitise with the help of disinfectants and other chemicals.
  • Examining and inspecting the animals to identify diseases and to ensure proper growth and weight gain.
  • Inspecting the flock for diseases and removing dead/ill/weak birds.
  • Proper collection of eggs and recording the number of eggs that each poultry animal lays.
  • Maintaining as well as repairing machinery, equipment, layers, pens, buildings, fences and yards

How to become a poultry worker – eligibility criteria 

You may not need any formal education to get a job in a poultry farm. However, it is better to complete at least Class 5 in school before trying to get a job. 

You may also obtain NSQF Level 3/4/5 certificates as above from National Academy of RUDSETI, Agricultural Skill Council of India (ASCI) or Rural Self Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs). 

You may also apply for training courses in ‘Animal Husbandry’at an ITI or a similar institute.

Educational fees

The educational fees to become a dairy farmer is somewhere around Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,000. 

Job Opportunities 

You will find work at different individually owned poultry farms or farms contracted by various corporate organisations, which are involved in breeding, raising, sales and export of livestock production.

Salary of Poultry worker 

You can earn anywhere between Rs. 5,000- 10,000 monthly at the beginning of your career. However, this increases over time and varies with quality of produce and location.

Career Progression of poultry worker 

You can grow within the poultry business through roles such as Poultry Farm Supervisor, Assistant Farm Manager, Unit Manager etc. You can also set up your own poultry farm after gaining adequate experience.

The poultry sector has very bright prospects. Today, India is the 3rd largest producer of eggs and 5th largest producer of poultry meat in the world. Poultry sector is expected to grow at least 5% per year. Increasing number of poultry farm entrepreneurs is leading to increase in jobs also.

After obtaining proper training and certification, you will also be eligible to set up and run your own farm unit as well as employ more workers at your farm in future. Today, more than 90% of poultry produce comes from poultry farmers running their own farms in rural India.
