Rules & Regulations
Admission to Jadavpur University is extremely competitive.
The process is reviewed annually and improvements implemented on a regular basis. There are many schemes and programs for students from backward and disadvantaged sections of society, especially those from remote rural areas.
You will be encouraged to participate in curriculum development. This participation is possible through your formal feedback on teachers, course content and infrastructural facilities, as well as through debate and discussion at the department-specific student-teacher committees.
Student Enrolment
Jadavpur University admission announcements (dates/policies) are made in major newspapers and are also by media houses.
Jadavpur University Admission Process (Master’s)
- For Engineering & Technology departments, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) results are important for admission
- In addition, those‘sponsored by industry’ as well as self-sponsored students are admitted.
- If you are a GATE applicant, your GATE score will be given a 70% weightage, while for others their BE or BTech scores are given 50% weightage; the remaining percentage shall be determined through tests, with 10% weightage given to industry experience for students ‘sponsored by industry’.
- In the Science disciplines, admission to PG programs will be on the basis of graduation level merit (BSc marks) with entrance test, conducted by the individual departments.
- In the Arts disciplines, your BA (Honours) results and admission tests conducted by individual departments shall determine your eligibility and admission.
PhD Admission
The university awards:
- D Litt. in Arts, D Sc in Science/ Engineering & Technology/ Interdisciplinary Studies
- PhD (Arts/ Science/ Engineering/ specific areas of Interdisciplinary Studies)
D Sc degrees are considered higher than PhD with no supervisory guidance needed.
However, guidance is compulsory for PhD degrees in all disciplines except if you are a whole-time employee of JU wishing to complete your PhD studies in the university, you may do so without any supervisory guidance.
- If you have obtained a Master’s degree in any discipline from any University or other institution recognized by Jadavpur University, that will be considered sufficient to make your application for admission for a PhD program to the Registrar of Jadavpur University
- If you have obtained a Postgraduate Diploma/ Degree of less than 2 years, you are also eligible to apply for PhD admission, provided you have completed at least a total of 5 years of graduate and PG study in a recognized institution
- If you have obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Pharmacy/ MCA from Jadavpur University or from any other recognized university, you are eligible for admission to PhD programs (refer to PhD admission link given at the bottom of this page)
- If you have an M Phil/ ME/ M Tech/ M Arch/ M Pharm or a degree deemed equivalent or in case you are a NET/ SET/ GATE/ Teacher Fellow, you will have to successfully clear an interview on your subject conducted by respective Doctorate committees to qualify for admission.

- You have to visit the official website
- Navigate to designated location on the site. The active link will be scrolling on the top of the page
- Then click “Apply link”
- Fill up all the necessary details
- Attach required information
- Click submit button
- Pay the Fees online.
This is through the SBI Collect system which accepts modes including Credit Card/Debit Card/ Net banking.
You can do this after 48 hours of form fill up.
- After the successful payment you will have to submit the print out of online application along with a photocopy of online payment receipt downloaded from SBI to the office of Jadavpur University Main campus, Kolkata 700032.

- 2 recent Passport Size Photograph
- Attested Copy of Caste Certificate
- Attested copies of all mark-sheets and certificates
- NET/SET certificate, if any
- Madhyamik admit card/certificate for verification of age
M.Phil.
Note: if you have completed M. Phil. Degree, you will be required to submit an M.Phil. certificate which states that your selection to the M.Phil. course was made through a written test and that a full paper on Research Methodology of at least one-semester duration was taught duringyour M.Phil. course. Otherwise, a waiver from WRET and/or course-work shall not be granted to you.
